From Startup to Giant

The relationship between the Gina Din Group and Safaricom began in 1999, when Safaricom started as a department of the now defunct Kenya Posts & Telecommunication Corporation (KPTC). For over 12 years we were a core part of Safaricom’s achievements and played a key role in the communication of the company’s milestones such as the launch of M-PESA, the setting up of the Safaricom Foundation and the successful execution of East Africa’s biggest IPO bid.

In order to do this, we integrated into the Safaricom business and worked to understand the Safaricom brand and telecoms industry. Our ability to think out of the box, moreover, gave both us and Safaricom a chance to successfully navigate unchartered territory and gain valuable experience along the way.

Throughout the years, we initiated a number of key initiatives that built the brand to be one of the country’s strongest and most recognisable names. We were also responsible for corporate communications and leadership profiling, which has seen former CEO Michael Joseph and current CEO Bob Collymore become industry thought leaders and highly respected business leaders in the region.

The team at the Gina Din Group has also worked closely with the Safaricom Foundation, supporting CSR opportunities and amplifying them appropriately. A key example is the “Kenyans for Kenya” initiative in 2011, which was hailed as a true testament of the power of the Safaricom and the Gina Din Group relationship. Maximising and leveraging combined resources, the country was mobilised into action to help end hunger in the region and support a workable solution to the crisis. In addition to this, we initiated PR campaigns that positively impacted local communities. Safaricom has now engrained this ethos into their core values, which read: “to impact communities in direct ways through support for community projects.”

Through this long working partnership, both Safaricom and the Gina Din Group have won several awards for outstanding PR campaigns.
